Born in 1982 in Gozo, Malta, Victor Agius grew up around sculpture through his father, Mario Agius. After graduating from the University of Malta’s Fine Art Department (2004), he continued his studies at the International School of Painting, Drawing & Sculpture, Perugia (2009) and at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London (2011).
His work has been shown at major Maltese venues—including the National Museum of Fine Arts and St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity—and at culturally significant public sites such as the Ġgantija Neolithic temple complex (UNESCO) and Mdina Cathedral. Internationally he has exhibited at Spazio Pastificio Cerere (Rome, 2012), Galleria San Eufemia (Venice, 2011), Arte Padova Fair (Padova, 2011), Oxford University – Long Room Gallery (2010), the Florence Biennale (2009) and the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo (2006). In 2014 he represented Malta at the European Ceramic Context in Bornholm, Denmark. His proposal for Maltese public art, Ħaġarna, was later selected in a national competition.
Agius’ practice spans performance, installation, sculpture and painting, and often explores formless matter. Working with earth-derived materials—raw clay, natural pigments, oils and acrylics—he engages sites with distinct ecological and archaeological features. Through this material inquiry he reflects on human existence broadly, and the limits of his own in particular.
